Pro Prospects: Quest for the title

Pro Prospects: Quest for the title
June 8, 2016

The end of the club season in Europe brings a long a number of domestic trophies for youth teams. This past week, there were a few U.S. youth national team players who competed for hardware in the various leagues prior to going on break for summer.

U.S. U17 Men’s National Team forward Timothy Weah scored for PSG on Saturday in the U17 French Championship. Weah’s goal came in the 52nd minute as he put PSG up 2-1. The well-funded club went on to win the game 4-2.

Weah was also instrumental in the team reaching the final as he scored the opening goal in the 2-1 semifinal victory over Troyes on May 28th.

While Weah’s success at the club this season has been extraordinary, the PSG Academy is a difficult place to break through. The club’s U19 team also won the French Championship on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Lyon.

Weah’s place at the club is secure though. He recently signed an apprenticeship (semi-pro) contract with PSG until 2018, which included a signing bonus of €35,000. The forward has been called into two events with the U.S. U17 Men’s National Team during the cycle for qualification to the 2017 U17 World Cup. As he advances at PSG, he will likely keep hold of one of the roles as a forward with John Hackworth’s group.

Akale to take on Real Madrid

U.S. youth national team attacker Mukwelle Akale helped Villarreal U19 into the semifinal of the Copa del Rey this month with a sterling performance against Sporting Gijon in the quarterfinal. Akale was the key piece in two of the goals in that round as Villarreal captured a 4-1 win.

Akale and Villarreal take on Real Madrid on June 11 in the first leg of the semifinal.
